(Washington, D.C.): In a letter led by Americans United for Life (AUL) and the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC), more than one hundred organizations represent their serious concerns regarding the danger to women by chemical abortion, namely mifepristone.

Less than a month ago, the EPPC released their analysis of commercially available claims data that demonstrated serious adverse events occur 22x the rate that the FDA currently recognizes on the approved drug label for Mifeprex. While the FDA exists to ensure the safety and efficacy of drugs like mifepristone, under the Obama administration, the agency removed the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) put in place to protect patients and record adverse events.

This coalition letter calls for the FDA to immediately restore the REMS protections for women while they consider more comprehensive action, even the revocation of the FDA approval for mifepristone altogether. HHS Secretary Kennedy and FDA Commissioner Makary have the authority and means to correct the FDA’s historical oversight and must do so immediately. Commissioner Makary has stated he intends to make decisions based on available data, and the EPPC has now provided it.

According to John Mize, CEO of Americans United for Life (AUL), “The FDA has lost the trust of the American people by neglecting to protect women from this dangerous drug. Political agendas must be swiftly put aside for the safety of women across the nation and to restore the institutional safeguard that was meant to be the FDA.”

AUL is dedicated to holding the FDA accountable to its duty as protectors of American health and is prepared to work alongside allied organizations to achieve our mutual goal of protecting American women.
