(Washington, D.C.): Following President Trump’s call earlier this week for House Republicans to be “flexible” on Hyde, the House of Representatives passed a three-year extension of the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies without Hyde protections, a drastic departure from the pro-life leadership of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

Brad Kehr, Government Affairs Director for Americans United for Life, stated, “It is unconscionable that any House Republicans joined with Democrats to perpetuate the largest ever expansion of taxpayer funding for abortion. It is good for Congress to build a more effective and efficient approach to healthcare. But it must never be at the expense of preborn American life.”

Senior Director of Communications and Public Relations, Sarah Zagorski, emphasized, “We are gravely concerned by the House’s passage of the motion to discharge Rep. Jeffries’ three-year ACA funding extension. Abandoning Hyde provisions compels taxpayers to subsidize abortion, and when a nation fails to codify protections for not only their taxpayers, but the preborn, moral decline is not speculative but inevitable.

She added, “While we are grateful for Speaker Johnson’s principled stand in defense of Hyde, President Trump’s call for Republicans to be ‘flexible’ has set in motion a dangerous course that threatens to set the pro-life movement back a generation, undermining the genuine good achieved during his presidency. Hyde is a moral line of conscience, not a bargaining chip.”
