(Washington, D.C.): Yesterday, 51 U.S. Senators led by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) issued a letter to Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary, encouraging the FDA leadership to take action to suspend the approval of both name-brand and generic mifepristone approvals until the agency review of the drug is complete. A key emphasis of the letter was to end mail-order abortion as allowed by the pro-abortion Biden Administration.

John Mize, CEO of Americans United for Life (AUL), stated, “While we are grateful for Secretary Kennedy and Commissioner Makary’s commitment to women by promising a review of mifepristone’s safety when used for chemical abortions, the recent approval of a second generic is troubling. Americans United for Life fully supports the steps outlined within the letter led by Senator Graham and wishes to see the drug’s removal while further investigation is done into its evidentiary danger to women.”

“We are increasingly concerned about the access to mifepristone on the market,” Sarah Zagorski, Senior Director of Public Relations and Communications for AUL, added. “While stories continue to surface about women being coerced, or even forced, into chemical abortion due to the unregulated availability of these drugs via mail, the FDA has, at minimum, the duty to ensure a halt to mail-order abortion.”

AUL thanks each U.S. Senator who has signed their support to the cause of women and hopes continued pressure will be placed upon the FDA to transparently review the drug to the highest scientific standards. The American people deserve to know the risks posed to them by the continued availability of mifepristone and the FDA is uniquely positioned to end the harm imposed to the nation by Biden-era deregulation.
