“Americans United for Life is disappointed by the Senate’s failure to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act this evening. Not only would this legislation have provided protections for unborn children who feel pain, but it would also have protected mothers from the increased risks associated with later-term abortions. Research shows that a woman seeking an abortion at 20 weeks (five months) is 35 times more likely to die from an abortion than she was in the first trimester.

We sincerely thank bill sponsor Senator Graham and Majority Leader McConnell for their hard work on this bill. We also thank Democratic Senators Bob Casey (VA), Joe Donnelly (IN), and Joe Manchin (WV), who rose above party politics in order to support this important legislation that aimed to protect both mothers and their unborn children from the harms of abortion. We urge leaders in both Houses to continue to fight for life-affirming legislation, and we assure everyone that this fight is not over.”
