WASHINGTON, D.C. (6/22/12) – Today three national pro-life women leaders joined together asking Rep. Nan Hayworth (NY-19) why she voted against the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (PRENDA), a bill to ban sex-selective abortion. Dr. Charmaine Yoest, President & CEO of Americans United for Life, Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, and Penny Nance, President & CEO of Concerned Women for America sent a joint Action Alert to their members in New York urging them to write to Congresswoman Hayworth and to ask for an explanation of her vote.
“This is a real war on women: There is nothing pro-woman about killing a baby girl because she is female, and putting her mother’s health and safety at risk in the process,” said Dr. Yoest, President and CEO of Americans United for Life. “Americans—whether pro-life or pro-abortion—overwhelmingly oppose this barbaric practice and believe it is wrong when we turn a blind eye to women being eliminated in the womb simply for being a member of the female sex.”
Below is an excerpt from the Action Alert sent from all three pro-life organizations:
“Sex selection abortions are happening right here in the United States. Studying sex-ratios, researchers at Columbia University, the University of Texas and elsewhere have found evidence that, within certain communities, baby girls are being aborted solely because of their sex.
“Worldwide, an estimated 163 million baby girls have been aborted solely because of their gender.
“While 246 Members of Congress voted to end this lethal discrimination against unborn baby girls in the womb, I am disappointed to tell you that Congresswoman Nan Hayworth of New York was not one of them.
“And she needs to hear from you right now.
“Take Action: Ask Congresswoman Hayworth why she chose to stand with the abortion lobby rather than defend women from the lethal discrimination of sex-selection abortion.”
On May 31, a bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives voted 246-168 in favor of PRENDA. However, because the House was voting under suspension of the rules, the legislation required a two-thirds majority vote to pass and was not approved.
