(Washington, D.C.): Following yesterday’s midterm elections, the 120th Congress will be governed by pro-abortion majorities in both the House and Senate.

John Mize, CEO of Americans United for Life, stated, “The next Congress will be characterized by pro-abortion antagonism under hostile leadership. However, that does not mean the pro-life movement can ignore our work on Capitol Hill. We must continue to defend legacy pro-life riders like the Hyde and Weldon amendments. Codifying the abortion extremism of Roe v. Wade using the Women’s Health Protection Act will be a primary goal of this new majority, and we must ensure its defeat.

“Americans United for Life will continue our diligent work in the states and among the administration. Pro-life efforts have survived darker days, and the movement must continue to fight for future victories that are still to be won.”

In the states, abortion ballot measures succeeded in Virginia and Nevada, while the measure aimed at reversing Missouri’s previous abortion amendment failed. Idaho was the only state to successfully defeat its pro-abortion measure.

Sarah Zagorksi, VP of Marketing & Communications at AUL, added, “While we are heartened by the Idaho measure’s defeat, the devastating losses at the ballot box in Missouri, Nevada and Virginia show that we still have a long way to go in changing hearts and shifting culture toward life. The pro-life movement must double down on our education and grassroots efforts so Americans can feel confident in rejecting abortion extremism, knowing women and the unborn are protected.”
