(Washington, D.C.): Today, the House of Representatives passed the One Big Beautiful Bill and sent it to President Trump’s desk to be signed into law, supporting families and making history by completely defunding abortion providers for the next year. Previously, the Hyde Amendment has prohibited the direct subsidization of abortion, but this law will take it one step further and put an end to the indirect funding of abortion through fungible funding sources.
While Americans United for Life (AUL) hoped Congress would have included a more permanent defunding provision, we recognize this first in a political generation win that is a monumental step forward for the fight to protect federal tax dollars and the conscientious objections of our nation’s taxpayers. By defunding abortion providers, Congress will now be free to direct these funds toward authentic women’s health care and other pro-family initiatives.
Beyond abortion itself, the One Big Beautiful Bill also includes provisions to permanently expand the child tax credit and to strengthen the adoption tax credit, giving American families the break they deserve.
Steven H. Aden, Chief Legal Officer & General Counsel for Americans United for Life, emphasized, “The long-fought battle to defund abortion providers has managed yet another victory following the recent decision in Medina. The pro-life and pro-family provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill are a next step in the fight for life. We must continue to strive to permanently protect our tax dollars from the predatory abortion industry.”
Brad Kehr, Government Affairs Director with Americans United for Life stated, “Americans deserve their tax dollars to be used for the prosperity of our nation’s families, not the harm of women and girls. AUL will continue to work toward the full and permanent defunding of abortion providers in both federal and state arenas.”
