WASHINGTON, DC—Americans United for Life calls on the Senate to reject the radical and divisive “Equality Act,” H.R. 5, passed by the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday afternoon by a narrow and mostly partisan vote of 224-206. H.R. 5 includes an aggressive new provision that would enshrine abortion as a federal civil right by amending the 1964 Civil Rights Act, adding language intended to make abortions more available; expand taxpayer funding of abortion; and weaken conscience protections for healthcare providers opposed to participating in abortions.

AUL President and CEO Catherine Glenn Foster said:

The ‘Equality Act’ would be the single largest federal expansion of the violence of abortion in a generation. The consequences would be grave not only for the children lost to the gruesome procedure, but also for pro-life Americans across the nation who would be stripped of their rights of conscience to refuse to participate in abortion. Elevating abortion to a federally-protected civil right, and forcing taxpayers to pay for it, is not equality — it is discrimination. This gravy train for Planned Parenthood must stop now, and Congress must remember that Americans understand abortion for what it is – a tragic destruction of innocent human life, not a form of purported ‘healthcare.’

Americans United for Life (AUL) is a nonprofit, public-interest law and policy organization that holds the distinction of being the first national pro-life organization in America—incorporated in 1971. It protects and defends human life from conception to natural death through vigorous legislative, judicial, and educational efforts.
