WASHINGTON, DC— Catherine Glenn Foster, President & CEO of Americans United for Life, released the following statement congratulating President Joe Biden & Vice President Kamala Harris on their inauguration:
Americans United for Life congratulates President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as they are sworn into office. We sincerely hope that President Biden and Vice President Harris will lead our nation with wisdom and bravery in the days and years to come.
At this moment of change and transition, it would behoove us to reflect on what remains the same, and on what Americans know to be true in every season. The American people reject the self-harm and violence perpetuated by the abortion industry. We know that most Americans reject abortion the day before a child is born (80%), abortion in the third trimester (79%), and denying medical care for a child after birth (82%); that 68% even of self-described pro-choice Americans oppose abortion the day before a child is born; that 66% of pro-choice Americans oppose abortion in the third trimester; and that 77% of pro-choice Americans oppose removing medical care for a child born alive and in desperate need.
President Biden campaigned on his deep religious convictions and commitment to respecting the rights of conscience for all Americans. During his four-decade career in the United States Senate and his tenure as Vice President, Joe Biden consistently supported the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment has saved millions of lives by prohibiting taxpayer funds from enriching abortion businesses at the expense of women’s health. President Biden has a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable among us, and to protect Americans who voted for him—in part based on his historical position on abortion protections—from the most extreme elements of his political coalition.
Once again, we congratulate President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and wish them a safe and fruitful time in office. We look forward to working with this administration whenever and wherever possible to advance the human right to life.
