Catherine Glenn Foster, President & CEO of Americans United for Life, issued the following statement in response to Planned Parenthood of New York’s disavowal of their founder Margaret Sanger:
“A hearty congratulations to Planned Parenthood of New York for canceling Margaret Sanger! Margaret Sanger, their racist founder and a vicious eugenicist, sought to eliminate as many people of color as possible. Planned Parenthood was Sanger’s proudest achievement and, tragically, Planned Parenthood continues to carry out her racist and marginalizing vision through ever more violent means. But today they do so under the banner of autonomy and freedom of choice.
In New York City, more black children are aborted every year than born. Advocates for the human right to life have for a century pointed to Margaret Sanger’s appalling views and the way that her ideology of white supremacy permeates Planned Parenthood’s work.
While eliminating Margaret Sanger’s name from a single Planned Parenthood building is a start, it would be far better for Planned Parenthood to disavow the abhorrent and backward views of their founder. Ultimately, Planned Parenthood must cease performing abortions and turn their work towards helping families truly plan successful parenthood by assisting them in meeting the material, social, and emotional needs of raising happy and healthy families-which are never built upon the foundation of violence and self-harm of abortion.
For now, we recognize that Planned Parenthood cares more about money and power than about happy and healthy outcomes for those they claim to serve.”
