Americans United for Life submitted a Comment today urging the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to adopt its proposed rule protecting conscience rights in health care. The proposed rule would give HHS’s Office of Civil Rights responsibility and power to vigorously enforce conscience rights and anti-discrimination laws already passed by Congress. AUL’s comment demonstrates that freedom of conscience is a fundamental right affirmed by our Founders, the United States Supreme Court, and Congress. AUL’s Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel, Steve Aden explains, “With the stronger protections for rights of conscience contemplated by the proposed rule, and HHS’s renewed determination to fulfill its statutory mandate to fully investigate and enforce these protections, I am confident that caring health care professionals will increasingly see their fundamental rights vindicated and respected.”
