Last week, Denise Burke, AUL’s Vice President of Legal Affairs, and I went to Dallas to Care Net’s annual conference to bring pregnancy center directors and volunteers up to speed on the attacks against them and to teach them how to lobby legislators to defend their life-saving work.
In the last couple of years, NARAL has introduced legislation in several states attempting to put new onerous restrictions on pregnancy centers in an effort to diminish or eliminate their capacity to help women in need.
Denise taught a track on the current legislative environment and what bills were considered in state legislatures this year. I taught a track on lobbying and brought in three Texas state legislators, Reps. Phil King, Mark Shelton, and Van Taylor, who educated the attendees on how to be effective when making a visit to their state capitol.
The sessions were a great success and AUL is already working with Care Net on similar tracks for next year’s annual meeting. If you would like to come learn more about this vital area of pro-life involvement, be sure to pencil in next year’s Care Net conference which will be in September in Orlando, Florida.
